If you coat the outside of the tanks with appropriate white or light color….or add a wood or bamboo border around (aesthetics up to you) it will help mitigate soil heat on plant roots. I did tests on them early on but can’t easily find – but enuf to recall it was for the more shallow rooted plants – significant.
BTW, while stuff is ‘rotting’…after a week or two..I use some of the water as a ‘tea’ to ‘dress’ the plants instead of chemical fertilizer. BIG diff. All works out somehow. Unfortunately, still taking care of elderly (90’s) father..so my garden is, of necessity, and again, much smaller this year. Grapevines not clipped back correctly, espaliered apple trees running amok…always something — but nature is so resilient. I love.May 29, 2017 at 2:35 pm #51940
The state of affairs in the human world on earth is so bad, in my personal belief system, I have no doubt Mother Nature, encouraged by God will have no choice but to show every human on earth who really ‘runs’ the world – and is most important….and that will entail unleashing a sh** load of indescribable human suffering. Only then do I think, and not in my lifetime, will the different races and religions have a last opportunity to dwell in peace on this earth.
I often think that the language/communication barriers alone, ’cause many of the problems. Just look at what the choice of words, how they are used and in what order creates havoc in our own country, in the English language.May 29, 2017 at 2:26 pm #51939

I have used galvanized tanks for years – but stopped using them for growing a number of years ago as my gardening needs expanded. In my experience – do NOT put holes in the tanks unless you coat around the holes and the edge of the hole with a silicone rubber sealant. If you do, believe me, you will speed the rusting of the tank – the coating gets compromised, see? If you grow acid loving plants the coating will break down faster – but they will last you a very long time – so no worries really. It’s the holes in them in not coated will speed the degradation quickly.
If you live in an area that can get lots of rain, and/or days on end – then make the holes but coat them. Otherwise, a deep layer of gravel (I used 8″) with fine mesh or cheesier landscape fabric (very lightweight) to keep the soil from migrating easily will do.
The things to think about is1) how hot, when placed in full sun, the zinc will heat up the soil. The zinc tanks when new will blind you sometimes in the sun!! (Also draw attention BTW) – 2) how much soil it takes to fill them. A 100 gallon tank, for instance, will take 600 pounds of soil/material (or 15 – 40lb bags) to fill if I remember correctly, if you aren’t using a gravel layer. HTH
I use my old stock tanks (with holes plugged) to make my compost quicker. I add straw, leaves, horse manure, garden waste, cut up small twigs and branches (run through chipper) into one tank until it is half full, and fill the rest of the way with water and literally let it rot. Then use a pitchfork and shovel to transfer it into another empty tank to dry out, turning it once a week or so. Then I add earthworms – let it sit a couple of weeks more – then use it. Quick.February 3, 2017 at 3:48 am #51158
He is gay. He is not all over the place. Watch this youtube video on Dace Rubin on Aethism or on Donald Trump with Dave Rubin. This will give you a clear picture of him before he hyped it up and started on his faggot tour, his words not mine. I do admire his quick thinking, thought and ability to express himself.February 3, 2017 at 3:42 am #51157
Well damn, the entire post I wrote just disappeared – hate windows 8 and 10! So, I have written about this before GS – so here is a link to previous discussion thread a few years ago: link I use a Jotul wood stove with non electric fans from Lehmans to move heat around downstairs..and more. Farm Tek lights and fans for barn and chicken house and run-ins…basically. Yes I have a battery bank but use a portable, BIG solar generator from SunRnr instead of a standard battery bank. Much easier. Also made in Virginia. Can’t recommend Ron enough at Sunshineworks.com in TN for help. Bought all my Pico lights from him. His site by itself will teach you much. Solar fridge and freezers in basement – kitchen upstairs looks normal for ops sake. HTH?February 3, 2017 at 1:15 am #51154
Freedom – After doing lots of research and taking a series of free classes…7 years ago I bought panels, hired an electrician and had them installed. Maybe permits were required, but no one has ever said a word. I use mostly solar powered lights (German made) I bought from a great supplier who helped me from TN. Added panels every year as cud afford them. Barn lights, fans etc – solar powered. That’s here in VA. Field water outlets and heaters are solar powered. Did myself frm Harbor Freight. Pumps used to pump water from huge pond to fields – solar powered…did myself 2 years ago. Pool? Floating solar powered skimmer and filter.February 2, 2017 at 10:57 pm #51148
Freedom,,,,, yes u can! Learn solar. 4800 sqft, dual fuel, from $600 plus in January…with wood stove and solar $150 and that mostly due to elderly father always being cold so has ceramic heaters to augment 72 degree indoor temp. Barn $130/mo (heated wash stall and attendant pipes went to ZERO. Waiting for Elon Musk’s home energy ‘plant’February 2, 2017 at 10:29 pm #51146
Freedom! LOL! Gladly,,,,together with the higher energy bills! Best to you and your family.February 2, 2017 at 10:23 pm #51144
Whirli – I have no doubt, I have a no reason to complain. We here in Northern VA have had less than 1″ of snow this season and fairly (compared to last 5 years) moderate temps. But the winter is not over. I am grateful for Nature passing us by to this point. But last winter with the 3-4 ft plus we are nmot used to was too much. It would not have been bad if I did not have my elderly father with us that has dementia. Somehow, in his brain he did not ‘see’ the snow. The constant worry about the strange/life-threatening things his mind led him to do then is still too fresh. I had eight horses and other livestock to dig out and take care of …that would have been fine. But people. Take care of your health. The added ‘burden’ of my father and the worry was not good. Sad thing is he has more than enough money to be in assisted living…but family members (all that live on the left coast) are more worried about depleting his significant funds if he were to be sent there. Yet, sadly, do they come or call? Visit? No. Thankfully I have established myself in a small community that, just when I think I will break…join to save me. Selco’s latest post? Pay attention. You can not do it alone. Start now. Engage with your ‘community’…get and know your neighbors and do all you can to increase camaraderie and friendship. They can and will save your bacon. I will repay them in kind,

Whirlibird….I stand corrected. Sometimes she just appears ruthless to humans. I do agree with you. I suppose I am just feeling a bit vulnerable at the moment, given where I live and my current responsibilities…lol and remembering last winter’s big dump of snow. So praying we are not surprised with one in the next few months – I think it would be the straw that breaks the camel’s back for me personally at this point. Hope you and yours are well.February 2, 2017 at 6:13 pm #51133
Freedom and GS thank you for your replies.I have been mulling this over for a few days (before this latest incident) to clarify internally my position on this. It does help to listen to others point of view. Currently have little free time to talk to others as life is over full, taking care of an elderly father here on the farm with dementia. So, again, thanks.
Milo, although he has very interesting points, to make seems to be out for the fame, the thrill and attention…the money he will make from his book no doubt helps. Perhaps his motives are more altruistic but it doesn’t at first glance appear so. He is interesting to listen to and I can certainly understand why he riles liberal young people (especially those that do not have fully formed and informed ideas of their own).
GS you put my thoughts much more clearly than I am able to do myself. I see Freedom’s point, but in this case do not believe fanning the flames as he is doing on his ‘Faggot’ tour, helps the country at all. And, it certainly doesn’t help the body politics mindframe…or in the end Trump (whom he is said to support and calls his ‘Daddy’). Sometimes it is better to step away and make one’s point(s) and opinion in or using another venue and tone. Here Freedom, at least for now, we in the US do have that option.
California is a beautiful state. I don’t wish any of my fellows harm. But sometimes I wonder why it hasn’t already cracked off the continent and sunk – and, not from an earthquake.February 2, 2017 at 12:03 pm #51121
GS – thank you for that. Perfect analogy. Experienced something a teeny bit similar last week in small group I still attend. Practicing silent movement/making oneself invisible when visible etc.Met at old house, practiced walking through for some time. Being aware, mentally counting positions, making oneself small. Knew we would do it again blind folded. Each separately. Others outside. Walk through – or tried. Crashed in to everything. It seemed nothing was where it had been. Crashed/stumbled/bashed into all manner of things. -disoriented. The instructor had moved things about inside. He had been working on teaching us to ‘sense’ mass and energy (quickest way to describe). Many of us thought we might be making progress. Huh.
Years ago I asked the people that worked for our business to read a little book ‘Who Moved the Cheese?” Never forgot the lessons in that little book. The cheese has been moved politically in the US – for now. That little book shows exactly what is happening now as a result of the cheese being moved. But I think while Americans are so busy fighting each other, or falling prey to other distractions of the ‘modern’ tech world….some demented little despot may very well do something to start a war….and I have NO doubt Mother Nature is going to put her 2 cents in, in the most unexpected way. She is ruthless – and will give many something to REALLY think about. She does not suffer fools greatly. Expect chaos – be grateful for any calm where and when you find it.
