Robotics is a good field for young people to get into be it the engineering/programming side, manufacturing, or the support. My son worked on the construction & programming of a robot when he was in college and then did some programming support for them after he graduated, and this was at a tiny State College, not MIT or some such. He considered going into robotics as a career but didn’t want to live where the jobs were at the time.

Most robots don’t look humanoid and have very specialized roles. A friend has a vacuum cleaner robot that works untended while she is at work. Other friends have robotic pool cleaners. It is only a matter of time that they start appearing in fast food places and in office settings. Where I worked we considered a robotic mail cart at one point.
