GirlScout, the good news is that you did learn. I was recently in my son-in-law’s car and noticed he was on “E” with a range of 36 miles until he’d run out of gas. He lives in a suburban setting and has plenty of money but just didn’t see the urgency in stopping for gas. He just assumes the gas stations will always be open when he wants them to be open. Me saying I never let myself go below half a tank just in case there is an emergency didn’t register. I mentioned that I always keep about $1,000 in my truck “just in case”. He thought that was odd because you can always find an ATM to get cash if you need it, but why not just use a credit card? Most people cannot see any reality other than the one they currently live in. Thankfully for you and your kids you learned a lesson and opened your eyes.
