Don’t know how the folks in Siberia or Alaska do it, but somehow they do. My grandfather served with the Army Expeditionary Forces in Siberia during WWI (Intelligence Service), but he never talked much about it, so I don’t know how he did it, either.
In cold places like Siberia, Fairbanks and Fargo it is all about the really cool looking furry hats…..

Just finished a run of “sugar shine” last night and mixed it with some kerosene. It is crazy at how hot this burns in rocket stoves, for instance. I also have made a few alcohol stoves and this fuel burns almost too hot for the soda cans.
I have been looking for a good place to locally source my plant materials needed to do my essential oil stuff. We use various salves and topicals made with various oils for such things as cuts/scraps/burns/rashes/etc. We also make our own lip balms for instance. Considering that I am about out of my Carmex type stuff that my wife makes, I am really looking forward to pulling the needed ingredients.

I have tested alcohol fuel out in a Coleman lantern and if it is mixed with some sort of petroleum type fuel there are no problems. I also have several alcohol stoves that I run for camping. The next phase of my testing is to mess around with it in the multiburner Coleman camp stoves. I am just a bit sketched out until I see it working at someone else’s expense first. My multifuel Coleman camp stove works well with it, though.
The other part of my “messing around” with distillation is the essential oils aspect. Today I got my glass separator thing in the mail. I hope to get some time to the play with extracting essential oils after the holidays.

The mantle is the secret to making lanterns glow and produce light. It doesn’t really matter what fuel you use.

Just curious what you’re using for your source – got an acre of corn out the back door? (Honestly not mocking it – it’s actually intriguing.) And in the event of long term power failure, what will you do, or do you just plan on building up a good stock of fuel? What about storage vs. alcohol’s affinity for water?
Nice post for discussion. Thanks.
Any type of sugar and bread yeast will work to make the fuel. Maple from trees, sugar, corn, etc can be used.
Again, the fact that I can distill water with it also helps.

It also works well for distilling water for long term canning and making essessence for medicine. I have been waiting until I get my fuel license back to make my first run. At this point I was thinking about simple sugar based fuel. I can do it for about $6 per gallon versus the $5 per quart that the store charges.

Unfortunately, all of us who believe in and support the Constitution are targets. The moderate Democrat seems to be about the same ideology as the moderate muslim (I refuse to capitalize muslim or islam). “If you don’t agree with them then you need to be beaten into submission” seems to be their new mantra.
Living in the PNW and around all these liberals, I see it almost every day. I REALLY see it on the weekends while I work at the bar. If you get a couple drinks in these people they truly believe that it is their responsibility to attack any and all conservatives within reach. Pathetic is what it is……

I can only dream of having the ability to garden as you do. Some of my favorite posts, even though I really can’t relay the written knowledge into practical use. Some have a green thumb – mine is more like an Agent Orange.

I find one of the biggest problems with many of the “Coexist” Westerners is the fact that they are completely ignorant. They have not read the quran nor have they done any real, unbiased research from which to draw their conclusions. The phenomenon is not isolated to religion for “academia” tends to have no clue what is going on in the real world so they make things up to support their delusions. The “polar bears are drowning” fiasco is a prime example of this mindset – using anecdotal evidence from bush pilots as the basis for “climate change” evidence.
You must first understand that Islam does not allow anyone to interpret the religious writings and everything must be taken literally. Then take some time to read those writings. Ultimately, you will come to the rational conclusion that Islam is a religion of hate. There is no other conclusion to be drawn.
I can pass along book and verse to support my statements if needed. It would be more beneficial for anyone that disagrees to just read the books themselves, however.

Oops WB. It’s going to be either fusion or replacement. You know playing in the cold is not a good idea for you. Cold deadens the nerves. That’s an advantage for some injuries. Backs and packs, those days are over. Get a wood rocking chair with no stuffing. Your back will thank you.
You don’t have to deal with either one…. I am living proof of that. The Navy wanted to fuse 7 of mine together and I started doing some research, thinking outside of the box and parted ways with our military via med board.
WB- I am telling you and pleading with you to NOT just let some Western medicine hacks slice and dice you without checking out other options. Your physical being will never be the same…….

I have stenosis, degenerative disk disease and osteophites all through my spine due to a 30 ft fall. Eastern medicine (which has been around for thousands of years) worked where Western medicine (only about 50-60 years old) and chiropractors (only about 30-40 years old) couldn’t touch my pain. If you get a good one, they can also use shiatsu massage, which works like chiropractic therapy albeit better.

Damn WB…. I share your pain…..
I actually started paying a personal trainer to get me back in shape to move better, started drinking tart cherry juice on a regular basis and changed my diet to exclude almost all acid items (except the cherry juice). It has helped immensely. The VA had me on Flexeril and Vicodin daily for years. I had to go through almost a full year of acupuncture to get to a point where I didn’t constantly need the medications. As a suggestion that has worked for me and several other people I know, I would look at preventative (natural) and alternative medicine.

I am not all that fond of Glock pistols due to the chamber not being fully supported, thus adds an additional step when reloading the brass. My 9mm “battle pistol” is a 92 frame Beretta. Just like you WB, I went with what I put the most rounds through and can shoot by sheer muscle memory and no thought.
One of my carry pistols (in a shoulder rig) is a 1911 by Para Ordinance. I got a great deal on it and then did all sorts of upgrades. It is now a really nice, accurate, and extremely dependable piece of gear. The 1911 is a time honored classic that has proven itself in some of the nastiest places on Earth, so I can’t fault you for your choice. My social loads for that are Hornady XTP 230 gr hollow points pushed by H-110 if I remember right. I actually use XTP for my SA .44 mag as well. There are better, but these are nasty enough for my purposes.
My Pops has a 460 S&W. It is just a completely insane, hand cannon. I will stick with Elmer Keith’s assessment that the .44 mag is more than sufficient in a pistol.

I find it SO funny that a gay immigrant that actually applies common sense to social justice warrior arguments to discredit them. They can’t stand it. He does a great job of destroying feminists, liberals, progressives, sjw, etc.
The fact that the common person started to speak up is why we have all these imposed “political correctness” and “tolerance” programs shoved down our throats. It is really beyond hypocritical. Did anyone see what one of the BLM leader/founder said about whites? And the Southern Poverty hypocricial Law asshats aren’t protecting minority run hate groups…. Bah!

IIRC, didn’t Eisenhower deport over 2 million back to Mexico during his presidency? Where there’s a will, there is a way. Our current situation is not the first time we’ve had to deal with invaders (the proper term for those entering our country illegally and not to become citizens or incorporate our way of life as their own).
He loaded up several boat loads of them and shipped them back, the long way so that they wouldn’t want to come back.
Then we had old man Kennedy push through the Immigration Act in the mid 60’s that removed a lot of vetting and opened up welfare type programs to support new immigrants.
You can decide for yourself how well that worked.
