I agree the Mountain House tastes about the best out of the ones we have tried. Price wise we have opted for the Wise Food Storage. The flavor is comparable but you get more for your money. Both come in square buckets which is where I got the idea. Every scenario is going to have its own unique set of challenges. One thing that causes a big problem with hurricanes is evacuation. If you time your exit wrong you may very well end up weathering the storm in your vehicle. With the oh so sensational media it is sometimes hard for many to decide when and if they should leave. I have a friend who lives in Boca Raton, FL. She is not married and is not really a prepper(that probably changed last week). I spent the days prior to Irma making landfall trying to help her get ready. She knew the minimal basics of getting ready for a hurricane, non-perishable food, water and board up the windows. As we worked through the process there were a lot of “I never thought of that” moments. It was too late for some of the items but she did try to find some of them and saw all the empty shelves for herself. Fortunately the hurricane missed hitting them directly but I bet she will be better prepared for the next one.
Important docs are something a lot of people overlook. There are several dry bags available designed to be submerged and sized for stacks of documents. If maybe you don’t have the room/time to take your documents with you these bags could be used to protect them. Put your docs in the bags and put them back in a locked file cabinet. The bags could even be used to protect the docs if you are taking them with you.September 14, 2017 at 10:49 pm #52332
Glad you are doing well. I am very interested to hear your input.September 14, 2017 at 4:31 pm #52330
First off I could barely understand the words but hey I’m just an old dude (I had to go look up the lyrics…..that didn’t help much). I seem to remember old dudes telling me they couldn’t understand the words to some of my music when I was a kid too lol. Anyway, actions speek louder than words and all most will see is a white kid getting hung and the attacking of the teacher in the beginning .The video is despicable. What if the shoe were on the other foot? I haven’t heard of a black man being hung in a very long time. I guess in this kids mind society has not progressed in 60 years and hangings are commonplace still. I find it interesting at the end of the video his little speech talks about being an example to kids and not perpetuating hate yet the actions he depicts( he being the instigator in the classroom) are exactly how people are acting. That video was nothing more than a publicity stunt. The image he personifies is totally opposite of his words in the video. You want to reach and teach kids? Teach them intelligence, common sense and how not to be a thug instead of being the poster child for what you speak against. Ok rant over.September 12, 2017 at 11:57 pm #52325
Good news indeed!September 12, 2017 at 9:22 pm #52321
Disaster is about the only way it will end, what ever that disaster may be. I watched it happen with Harvey. Sadly though it seems on a national level it was a minor disturbance that warranted a short break from all the BS but is starting to slip right back to the old routine. It’s like waking up in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom only to go right back to bed and drift soundly back to sleep. Only locals directly affected seem to be staying the course and pulling together.September 12, 2017 at 9:14 pm #52320
GS glad you came through unscathed. Prayer works. There have been a few interesting developments post Harvey in Houston. Seems the mayor has proposed a “temporary” 9% land tax increase to help cover damages. You can bet this will get ugly. I won’t comment because sensor buttons would break.
Another development in Rockport, TX which was gound zero for the Harvey landfall is that they are being largely forgotten. The state is helping but most of the nationwide donations have been focused on Houston. They are in desperate need of supplies. People are trying their best on social media to spread the word but they still need help. Those costal towns near the landfall were demolished. Aransas Pass, a barrier island just south of Rockport was reported as a 100% loss. I guess something to take note of is that if a large scale disaster strikes in your area and there is a major metropolitan city nearby your small town may well be overlooked or forgotten.
GS I got in touch with Free today and posted about it in the other thread.September 12, 2017 at 8:58 pm #52318
Wanted to give everyone an update on Free. They are doing good just no power or internet. His preps are good and he wanted to thank everyone for checking in on him. Said he’ll be back in touch once they get internet back.September 12, 2017 at 4:53 pm #52315
Whirli you make an excellent point. It is the heart of a patriot that believes right will win but reality is often cruel. That belief is based strongly on the idea that the military will be on the conservative side. With today’s climate, who knows. It is not a simple divison of muskets and cannons anymore. There is a huge tech gap between civilian and military. If the military is not with us and we manage to survive the initial onslaught it would be a long long fight with the only miniscule chance of winning be based on guerilla warefare. We will not be able to match force with tanks and planes.September 10, 2017 at 12:42 am #52300
Still praying brother. Hang in there!September 9, 2017 at 5:35 pm #52284
Agreed. You wanna live in mother natures path of occasional temper tantrums, you foot the bill.September 9, 2017 at 5:33 pm #52283
Exactly GS. You are much better at drawing the picture by connecting the dots of experience. I am young enough to have not gone through the 60’s and only know about it from what I have read or been told.September 9, 2017 at 4:15 pm #52281
I have to disagree Tolik. The difference between hippies and Antifa is that this group is seeded with paid bad guys who are not afraid to kill when ordered. We have watched Antifa go from protests to rioting to assaulting people. They are young and dumb but it is monkey see monkey do. When the order is given a small group will inflict fatal wounds and the frenzy will start. It WILL be a blood bath and it will immediately be spun and the blame put on the evil violent Trump supporters. This is all a tool. When the final divide is created there will be sweeping movements to regain control. Those movements will totally disregard the Constitution.September 9, 2017 at 3:56 pm #52279
I have to use a computer and my cell every day for work. Truth is all those terms, conditions, privacy policies and app permissions are just CYA for the NSA. If you use your phone or PC they are watching. If you have agreed to those vague terms of “we” have permission to access/ monitor yada yada yada they are covered. If they want my info they are going to collect it. Nothing I can do to stop it. That is why I prefer physical assets. I have control and possession of them. It’s the best I can do. As far as being hacked, not much I can do about that either. They hack my bank, the bank covers my losses. That is also why I don’t keep all my money in the bank.
As far as the app goes I have found a little more info.
Looks like there was a little misinformation about zello. It has to have cell service or Wi-Fi, so it will work if cell service is out but only if you still have WiFi.September 9, 2017 at 2:53 am #52266
I’m really curious to fond out what technology it uses. The old nextels ran on cellular frequencies but the push to talk was capable of using FM in emergencies. When Katrina hit they passed those phones out to a lot of people because of that feature. Since push to talk went into public domain I wonder if Zello is usong the same tech.September 9, 2017 at 2:49 am #52265
