MB, good points which is not surprising as you clearly have a good head on your shoulders.
Freedom, the $18 trillion debt is just the hard debt. There is another $100 trillion in unfunded liabilities (SS, Medicare, ETC) which is absolutely impossible to repay, at least not lawfully. That debt plus the pending replacement of the USD by another currency(s) will almost necessarily doom America. That is why I came here as Selco has some personal info that might save the lives of some of my family members that dreadful day when the SHTF.

Looks like a quick way to lose a few fingers! I would want to add some type of hand guard so there would be no possibility of cutting off my own hand or even fingers. Once that is done it would be a GREAT tool to have! Thanks for pointing this out Tweva.

What boggles my mind is that so few countries allow even law abiding citizens to actually have the means of defending themselves against all types of threats, from perverts to serious murderous animals (two legged variety). Here in Tx, our solutions are easy. Have multiple weapons, always loaded and cocked, and be mentally ready to use them in an emergency. I cannot imagine NOT having the ability to defend myself, nor would I tolerate it.
The fact that so many countries prohibit their “citizens” from keeping and bearing arms really means their “citizens” are actually “subjects” who are under the complete control of government. I do not understand why those countries do not revolt today to arrest the criminals in office who deny the citizens their God-given right to self defense.
Why not start a global movement to force governments (at least civilized ones) to acknowledge the God-given rights of People? It would solve a great deal of problems as the criminals in government would be so worried about keeping the Citizens happy they would not have time to muck about making wars and other evil acts to suit their own evil ends.

The question is best answered if it were re-phrased. For example, if the question asked “What rations do you pack for a:
> 72 Hr long range recon?
> 4 Hr recon
> Hit and run engagement?
> 5 day recon / hunting / meeting locals mission?
> Long term permanent survival in place?
Each one has different needs and therefore different types and amounts of rations should be packed, along with the all important water.

Bienvenue Fred. Do you feel outnumbered in France being a prepper? I do living here in the colonies so I can only imagine what it must be like there. Good luck to you my Friend, and do let your voice be heard here.

I would be surprised if ISIS had only one location. We know there are well over 35 training camps in use by other jihadi groups, though so far as I know no one has ever been allowed in them. Suffice it to say they are not earning their Boy scout merit badges there.
Logistically speaking, a camp in El Paso makes a lot of sense especially if one is planning to funnel people and supplies into the US. The border is not secure in any way so when the SHTF, it will get much worse as control of the border will most likely be given up to drug cartels, bandits, and other low life like jihadi groups. It makes living in TX a tenuous proposition at best, so any of you living in TX should give serious consideration to building as large a MAD group as possible. (Mutually assured defense)

MB, all of the handhelds are limited in distance despite their claims otherwise. Generally speaking it is line of sight so the absolute maximum Tx/Rx range might be 20 miles, all things being perfect. But they rarely if ever are. Everything interferes with radio signals like hills, mountains, buildings, etc. So in an urban area the practical limit of a handheld regardless of the band, will be 2-4 miles, tops.
Ham radio is a colloquial term that does not really mean anything though it is often used when referring to Amateur radio. All radio freqs are regulated, SW bands being just one range. Many handheld radios are Dual-band (VHF/UHF). Other bands include HF (high freq; used to reach around the globe), CW (or CB), AM, & FM. Use of Ham in peace time requires a license to legally transmit. Without a license you can listen all you want but don’t transmit as the bands are monitored. Once the SHTF who knows what the rules will be though it is best to be prepared to operate lawfully.
Licenses include a Technician class (with some limitations) and General class good for all common bands with fewer restrictions.
The key to any effective radio use is the antenna. Handhelds can often be connected to external antennas which is a good thing as that can impact Tx/Rx dramatically. Power is another factor meaning how many watts does it transmit with.
An effective network will be a combination of handhelds, base units with better antennas for monitoring area activity and for Txing as needed. Lastly, a good ham base unit with the proper antenna will allow one to communicate worldwide whereas the other two are both limited in the distance they can function.
There are many good sources of info on the net including the ARRL (American Radio Relay League) which is the national association for Amateur Radio in the US. That is the best place to start. The next best is to join a local club as there is nothing like learning from an old pro, and almost all of them love to help newbies.
In all seriousness, COMMS in a SHTF scenario is a critical, essential component of our preparations. It is not far behind food, water, weapons/ammo in importance so do not leave it out of your planning or wait until the last minute to acquire 2-3 radios. Now is a great time to buy them as there are always many used radios available, though buying the right one in good condition is important which is why it is so important to connect with a local club.

Tolik, good points all, thanks. What I wonder about is how many of those currently serving in our military really understand what their oath means, or how many have ever even heard of posse comitatus, not to mention what it means. All the Active duty and Veterans I speak with about this very topic all say pretty much the same thing, that being some will immediately balk at unlawful orders, while others, especially the newer ones who have never had a real education about our founding, will follow orders at first. Perhaps over time many of those will eventually start to question their orders and when that happens, the military will crack down hard on them to keep them in line.
I guess my position is that we are relying heavily on an unknown, that being how many Active duty and how many Veterans will stand up and refuse to accept unlawful orders. I pray the numbers will surprise us all in a positive way for God knows we cannot ever defeat the military in open combat.
The other unknown is how many illegals and gang bangers are there in the military. It is reasonable to conclude that most all of those will side with the government as they have no loyalty to the US or worse, they hate the US and are using the military to learn tactics and to have access to weapons when the SHTF.
All of this leads me back to Dr Vieira’s position that we must re-institute our Constitutional militia. Without doing this our odds of prevailing are significantly lowered.

Tolik, downsizing the military is one option though it has side effects. If we downsize our military (speaking of the US) we must close all foreign bases so we can focus our attention on the US. I do not object to that though many will, especially those running the military-industrial complex and the politicians they bribe.
Re-instituting the Constitutional Militias in all states would be another lawful and effective way to be better prepared to defend our country while downsizing the military. Dr. Vieira, a well-known constitutional scholar, believes this is an essential step as it is the only time in our founding documents that the word “necessary” was used to refer to ANY aspect of our government and our rights. If indeed Militias of the States are “necessary” for our security, WHY did the politicians abandon them? Could it be they KNOW they cannot rule over us as long as we are well armed, well trained, and prepared to defend ourselves and our country from ALL enemies? I believe the clear answer to that rhetorical question is a resounding YES!

Tolik, you are right on target my friend. As proof, I recall my father telling me that on December 7 of 41 when the news got out about Pearl Harbor, all of the neighbors on their street were out of their house fully armed and ready to fight the japs. On 9/11, far too many Americans did nothing more than stare at their TV in fear and disbelief.
The Communists, liberals, and America haters have done an effective job at emasculating America’s males, or at least a large portion of them. Those of us that are left who are ready and willing to fight will at some point be called upon to fight the muslimes on American soil. I pray it happens in my time rather than my children’s as I want them to live in peace and freedom.

Looking back at your original post, you commented that Springfield XD’s require hotter loads than other pistols of the same caliber. Is it due to the slide spring spring? I have heard people tell me their handloads had stovepipe malfunctions regularly. Can you elaborate on that?

Sounds like Switzerland would be a great place to live. Too bad America did not retain its identity, culture, and language as the Swiss have. Had we done so, we would not be as deep in the scheisse as we are now.

freedom, good article. Also, some of the comments here are very valuable, like having catheters. It is something I never even considered, despite being married to a nurse. Looks like I have more to add to my list! Thanks for the info.

74, thanks for the clarification. I did misunderstand your post so I do appreciate the clarification. I know we are of like mind so it was not my intention to be rude, just to respond with information I believe to be accurate.
Thanks again for writing back. Be safe and be free.

74, cutting and pasting an article (which I did read) from an obviously liberally biased journalist is not a debate nor even a discussion. While it is clear there are two major sects of islam, Sunni and Shia, both of whom claim to be the true defender of the faith, they do not argue on primary concepts of islam as required by Mohammed and as written in the koran. Those concepts are that islam is supreme to all other religions as well as to all governments. That islam is the one true faith. That muslims must wage war, or jihad, on infidels to bring the entire world to allah. That deception, lying or taqiyya, is justifiable, meaning nothing they say in public can ever be trusted. That murdering infidels is not only acceptable but can be required as is stated in the koran in numerous surahs. That women are inferior to men, even to the point where the testimony of a woman is only worth a fraction of a man’s (Surah 2:282 where the testimony of two women is required to equal that of 1 man), and Surah 4:24 that says women can be sex slaves to men. Then there is the fact that in islam, all non-muslims are infidels and inferior to muslims.
What is also telling is that Lee Keath does not make a single doctrinal distinction between Sunni and Shia. He hides behind a supposed distinction between al queda and muslim brotherhood, neither of which are sects but merely groups within a sect, and neither of them have the authority of clerics to speak on the behalf of islam. He also attempts to accuse the US and the Saudis of being in league which even if completely true, in no way changes the doctrines of islam nor does it excuse the murder of the people in France.
What is does show is that liberals are largely apologists for islam and muslims, despite the liberals knowing that muslims hate them as much as they hate any infidel, for liberal philosophy promotes homosexuality, adultery, and other sins that are punishable by death under islam.
In the end, the actions of muslims are the proof that they are inherently evil and will continue to work towards the goal of establishing a global caliphate where islam controls the entire world. That is not a world in which I care to live, just as the dictatorship of the New World Order is one in which I refuse to live. I believe that we here are all in agreement with my latter point, so I propose that we cease discussions about the philosophy of islam and focus on ALL enemies of Freedom, be they muslims, DHS, NSA, Ovomit, or any other form of dictatorship that seeks to control mankind by destroying Freedom. That is a goal I believe we can all agree is worth pursuing, don’t you?
