thank you for the input Malgus
im not plainning to withstand some kind of seige, for i already knew that eventually with enough willpower, they will get in. if i can slow them down enough for us to grab our stuff and get out, then thats all i can ask for. i appreciate the suggestions very much.

yep, i have a compound bow, i have the bear spray, i have a bat… but these would escalate the situation here.. he wanted to go cause im sure he was afraid id hit him or mace him…so i let him go, figured he learned a well enough lesson by finding that there still could be dangers inside the house youre targeting..
anyway, thank you so much for all the input freedom! i may come off as argumentative, but i really truly do like the discussion

cmon guys i know im a young guy but im not an idiot. the two posts about the attempted burglary and this are totally unrelated… i read an article about it and i figured id pursue it further. burglary is a whole different thing than what im talking about here. i cant call 911 and say hey these guys want my preps, so i better figure out some ways to stop them myself

I assumed that this would be post SHTF…why would anybody put traps out during a peaceful time? im talking about BOOM the economy collapses and theres people coming down my street breaking into houses looking for supplies, what sorta counter measures could i employ? and yes of course they will either do 2 things to the intruder, they will discourage them enough to keep moving and go down the street or it will piss them off. slow them down enough to get into a better position to engage them you know? i dont want to be caught wiping my butt while some guy is climbing over my wall…

first thing i thought of was tinfoil! when you run out of your paper plates and bowls, theres tinfoil!
or maybe some febreeze or some other kinds of stench killers…really would make your life miserable if you had to live in a shelter that smells like a pig sty..
glass! i save glass! glass can be used for defensive purposes… marbles too! some bad guy creeping up your driveway? throw a nice big box of broken glass or marbles out and im sure that would discourage any intruder…you can use some of that JB Weld and put broken glass on top of your block fences, cause it would really suck for a bad guy if he put his hands up on top of your fence trying to hop over and was sliced and diced with a nice broken glass surprise…
nails, boards, screws, pretty much any kind of building material would be convenient…
im just trying to think outside the box here, i hope these suggestions are helpful!

in reply to Mr. Freedom,
of course i have plenty of knives and bats around the house, my parents simply do not believe in the use of firearms.. and i cant change that nor will i try…i feel this: yes, when SHTF we will be vulnerable, we will have to rely on close family friends with guns to protect us and i do not like that one bit. But on the other hand, the man who came in my window wanted nothing to do with me…if you broke into a house expecting nobody to be in it and was met with a 230 pound varsity linebacker, you would probably turn tail and leave as well…the man was totally unaware that i was home…sure, i could have grabbed a knife, ive got numerous laying around, but was it necessary? i feel like it would be excessive to whack the guy in the head with a crowbar or stab him with a knife. Now, if the guy broke in, saw me, and came at me…i would have killed him without hesitation…in this situation i dont think killing the guy would be reasonable…i dont know the poor mans situation, it obviously wasnt good…breaking into houses to support a family or a drug addiction is pretty low.
Heres my counter to me owning a long gun: in this situation, close in, with neighbors houses not 20 feet away, it seems unnecessary to take the risk…if i even had the time to get at a rifle or shotgun, in such close quarters, it would be unnecessary wouldnt it? he could turn it on me, i could miss and risk a stray bullet hitting my neighbor or his dog, i still cant even imagine how i would even get a long gun out in time to even get close to pulling the trigger….
i do know how to shoot and i shoot often. family friends take me all the time as they feel an extra shot can be useful when SHTF..granted it will be their weapon and ammunition, they understand that it would be beneficial to the groups survival if i know how to handle and operate a weapon…
again, i love this feedback and im learning alot here, thanks so much for the replies

i have a long way to go, and i appreciate the feedback

i have a water bottle from Thermos attached to my bug out bag that i intend to use JUST for this… its called a Thermos Tritan…it says the filters filter out chlorine, so i have it for that application.
heres a link on amazon
now it does say “reduces” contaminants such as chlorine, not exactly sure what that means but if im out of water and all i have left is my swimming pool, id like to have this bottle
i really really hope this was helpful, i just saw the topic and said hey i have a bottle for that! may have to re evaluate my plans but i felt like the input would be nice

Its not so much what can i learn from this information, its what can others in my group learn…im talking “hey how do you do this?” and having the ability to go to the books and figure it out. if im in a scenario like this, what would be the most frequently needed information? first aid, weapon care, food procurement?
And thank you freedom! will definitely be using the pdf!

This is an interesting topic to me, it seems like we have learned through books and history that SOCIETY BREAKS DOWN UNDER STRESS…i feel like we cannot let ourseles deviate from the word HUMAN. if we become more animal and more blood thirsty and violent, then we are no longer living up to the title Human…
