I never see this discussed, yet from experience, I can tell you that your routines can set you up for an attack and put you in danger. For the next couple of days, if you remember, stand outside of yourself and look. Make an effort to notice all of the many routines you have established as you live your life. Then think of all the information that someone could gain simply by watching you perform in your routine manner; and, how that can ultimately used to compromise your safety.

Very good point. Fortunately in the current time frame we only have to deal with a relatively small number of people that would behave that way, criminals, psychos and whatever. Not a giant population to deal with however maybe a more difficult situation if it were occurring.
I believe most of us are not living in shtf mode because we can’t. It would be to difficult to maintain normal work schedules etc, etc. Targeting a person under the current conditions would be so easy for a psycho because of your vulnerability. I don’t come home and sweep the house for intruders every time I come home to an empty house. Most folks have to leave their homes daily and the house is unguarded. That in of itself is a major liability.
However in shtf mode leaving the house unguarded is not likely. It also means creating a lager perimeter around your home so you and your home are not observed. Maybe impossible maybe not, requires a big group..April 10, 2014 at 4:41 pm #8028
1974t150v- Well, if practice, practice, practice is necessary to hope to have good automatic responses when carrying a gun or attacked with a knife, when responding to medical emergency etc – this I think IS the time to start being aware of your routines. Routines can get you attacked or killed. They can also save your life.
The first psycho/PCP drug dude that attacked me had been apparently following and watching me for some time. The police said he knew my schedule, i.e. my routine. If we,collectively, are preparing for SHTF, collecting stuff etc., how can you be sure someone has not noticed? Really? I know and see a lot of what my closest neighbor purchases and in what amounts every Saturday they go to COSTCO at 10am. And, if you can’t be sure – why not watch and be aware of your daily routines as much as possible and get in the habit now about changing them up when you can – get in the habit? Barring a one time, big, fell swoop of a calamity that brings on SHTF; as people get more and more uneasy and nervous, many more people will start to think of what they would do if their fears actually were to happen ( as we are doing now). Think what you already know about your neighbors just from their routines.
If I were so inclined, I could name at least 6/8 homes/places/barns I could easily stroll into and rob/lay in wait because I know the routines (not because I have been really watching, you just come to know/recognize patterns subconciously). Because I know vehicles and where they are parked I know if there are others visiting or if something unusual is going on. I called the cops a couple of weeks ago because this neighbor’s truck was gone (neighbor very routine) and there was a truck backed up to his barn I had never seen there before and men I could not identify from a distance. My gut new this was off. Guys trying to steal tack and tools out of his barn.
Last year visiting a friend on their large farm. Farm hand comes up- what to do? Someone is taking a shower in the bathroom down in the machine/equipment barn. Even I knew farm hand was the only worker there on Sundays. I say ‘Call the cops’ – friend engaging with farm hand over discussion of who could it be? Some homeless dude comes walking out of the bathroom when cops come, banging on door – smoking a joint. Who, what, why? God knows is the point – it was not normal/outside the routine so immediate red flag in my mind. Patterns, always patterns.
So even now, why would I not vary my routines as much as possible so even my immediate community could not ascertain the same about me? Why would I not get in the habit now of being aware of routines and my own and start practicing the ones that might save my life some day? I do practice this and I do work. And, I have been checking my house every time I come home for years now because of previous life experiences. Every night all windows and doors are checked, all blinds and drapes are pulled alarm lights checked. Each and every night for I can not sleep if I do not. I don’t feed the livestock the same exact time every morning and evening. There are ways to vary that at least to a degree.
I do not take the same car daily. I do not leave the car left behind in the same place. I do not grocery shop on the same day every week. I do not drive home the same way ever. I always am checking my side and rearview mirrors – it is now ingrained in me to notice who is around me in a vehicle and my mind I know does register patterns in vehicles around me if it exists when traveling a road I must take because there is not a rational alternative.
The property is checked on the perimeter regularly so I can recognize the little, small things that are out of place in all seasons and bear checking out.

Good points raised! I’d like to add, I think it may have been touched on in another thread, but can’t remember which one, that as well as varying our routines, look to ‘blend’ as much as possible, especially in urban areas. Be as non-descriptive as possible and try and avoid ‘unique identifying items’ on your person or your vehicles.
Be aware what is ‘non-descriptive’ in one area/region may well be a shining beacon of ‘attention’ in another!
Understanding ‘pattern of life analysis’ is also very useful for ambush/counter ambush considerations. Yes, you may just be in ‘the wrong place at the wrong time’ but if you’ve attracted specific attention then there can be a long term information gathering effort prior to any direct action being taken.
Also, don’t forget the implications of carrying electronic devices (especially anything communications enabled) that can be used to identify your patterns and routines and also your habits. One fun story, during a training drill we were once working in a ‘snatch squad’ type roll, horribly difficult to co-ordinate especially if the target is on foot in an urban environment and you want the snatch to be quiet and discrete, well one of the hardest things to co-ordinate is getting a vehicle alongside someone at *precisely* the right moment. Long story short, one of the advanced team guys realised that the target would stop walking, wherever he was, to answer his phone, would identify the caller and then would recommence walking, buying a good 3-5sec ‘stationary’ window Needless to say this was sufficiently exploited in the planning and execution phase… Yep, habits and routines can catch us all out!April 10, 2014 at 7:21 pm #8054

Routine really can kill you. That is why I often saying that you need to expect unexpected. However impossible sounds it can be done easy actually, just do not take always things like they look, and calculate all options.
There are many examples, in medical (EMS) field if you find man who smell on alcohol and who is unconscious most probably that he is very drunk, but you still need to check him, maybe he had only one drink and then someone attack him and knock him down.
Do not put “all stakes” in one option, always leave all possibilities open, it is very important in world when SHTF because people will act based on need of their survival, and everything else is less important to them, including you.April 10, 2014 at 7:59 pm #8059
Insightful topic Tweva! I make a point to change up my routine everyday. It’s just become part of my ‘normal’ behavior. Routine is also a creativity killer. Little things like change up routes to typical places I go, when to eat, and what time we go to bed. My observation suggest it makes for a more adaptive individual too. In my years behind a badge, routine was either wonderful or a killer.
For example, its Thursday night, thst car will be parked over there because those two people are having an affair.
Its the first weekend of the month, there will be heavy traffic in the alleys behind these houses because the new drug shipment arrived.
That person always stops for that stop sign, yet rolls through it at a blistering 8mph. Diabetic episode.
I worked the graveyard weekend shift for nearly 4 years straight.
I knew who, where, and what should be happening the entire shift, thanks to people’s routines.
I once solved 21 open cases because I knew who was out and what they drank.
Conversely, everyone knew when I worked, where I lived, etc.
The only thing they never knew or figured out was who I was seeing.
No matter how many different ways you go home, you will go home.
There are only so many restaurants, stores and such, you can only vary so much. There is always a place for an ambush, sometimes it just takes longer to ID the location/situation.
Then there’s personal routines, where you carry your gun and knife, where you store them at night, which pocket you keep your keys in, these things can keep you alive in an emergency.
