http://www.news24.com/Live/SouthAfrica/News/SAs-Stephen-McGown-held-hostage-by-al-Qaeda-pleads-help-me-20150623-2 a video has emerged of South African hostage Stephen McGown, who was kidnapped in 2011 from a hotel in Timbuktu, Mali.
The bird sounds in the background sounds so familiar. Even the trees. Strange, I could have guessed they are somewhere in the Northern parts of South Africa. The mind-set of a hostage… what you say.. How much the people keeping you think you are worth – then the political game.
June 25, 2015 at 3:41 pm #42059Now this is most definitely not the kind of news you want to hear, especially as we are in winter and there are two cold fronts about to hit the country.
Our peak demand is currently at 35 GW and we can only rely on 20 GW as “guaranteed”, the rest can go at any moment.http://www.fin24.com/Economy/Eskom/Over-50-chance-of-grid-meltdown-energy-analyst-20150624
June 25, 2015 at 4:31 pm #42061Have you read any of Cathy Buckle’s stuff?
Interesting read out of zim.June 25, 2015 at 7:22 pm #42063Time is ticking !! P1LGR1M – There is an Expo 20 km outside Pretoria tomorrow and Saturday http://kragdag.com/ekspos/uitstallerslys/ Seems like everything from Solar panels, 4×4 camping to earthworm farming (Sorry website in Afrikaans)
Thank you Whirlibird. I’ve read a few letters from Cathy Buckle now. Will be reading her stuff often
June 26, 2015 at 5:42 am #42070Thanks Leopard, will read through their website. Unfortunately my weekend is already full otherwise I would have gone there.
Actually spoke to my brother (Sparky in training) yesterday and asked him to suggest a beginner type kit for solar that is expandable, so will see what he has to say.June 26, 2015 at 12:49 pm #42073You may want to look into both the active (panels) and passive solar heat methods as its winter down there.
Geothermal heating and cooling may also ease the burden and costs.

As an example.
July 11, 2015 at 10:06 am #42447Thank you so much for the info Whirlibird.
This article is in Afrikaans, but looking at the picture you might be able to see how many millionaires (in dollars) have left South Africa http://www.netwerk24.com/sake/2015-07-10-rykes-verlaat-sa-op-streep?vc=cjR6xVmsLFicF5DSO3020YgQV9tIkj9%2FsgU1zrCmxsIiFjxhKZYTPjYAI2v%2FwHqCU47w9Ro0Cix75mkoaeIQtg%3D%3D The article ends by saying that the world out where is not blooming with work opportunities, still the richer South Africans are leaving the country at an alarming rate. Not even being able to afford property on the other side.
July 12, 2015 at 3:42 am #42459Before I got hurt I was building a passive solar heated house. Involved a “California Roof” and a row of windows. The house and windows faced the South (in your case would face the North) and shined on wooden barrels full of sand. The sand captured the heat and slowly released it during the day/night. I was thinking of passive solar heated water (from homemade panels on the roof) that would enter the house at floor level and warm/heat a tile floor (basically like a installed floor electric heating system.) Both systems would have “blinds” that would be closed if you did not need the heat.
RobinJuly 16, 2015 at 7:00 pm #42528Sounds interesting Robin. You got me thinking and drawing sketches immediately.

July 16, 2015 at 8:02 pm #42529Typical SA news
An enraged mob of more than 100 people, mostly women stoned, hit, kicked a young man to death whom they suspected of stealing a grass cutter.(like panga) When police arrived, the mob turned on them too – stoning them and their vehicles.

The various CPF’s, Security companies, Police and Metro Police came out in force and we had all the suspects apprehended in under three hours. Even though uncle Martiens paid the ultimate price, the overwhelming response by all involved actually gave me new hope for our country.
A HERO to the very last minute, goodbye uncle Martiens you may be gone, but the legacy you left behind will last forever.

So many police men died in my area the last month that it is just plain sad. A drunk driver drove into a patrolling police vehicle a few weeks ago. Their vehicle caught fire and they were stuck. They both died. The driver got a fine only.
Another farm murder – 77 year old burned and tortured
Some electricity news http://www.iol.co.za/news/south-africa/gauteng/load-limiting-to-kick-off-in-joburg-1.1887849#.Va3sraSqpHw This going to get very interesting….
On a lighter note – This poor 3 meter teenager shark got kicked in the teeth…may just loose interest in surfboards

While shopping at Wal Mart I wanted some oranges. First bag I picked said grown in South Africa. I chose not to buy them but another bag which was about $2 more. Not buying one bag did not hurt them but if 200,000 folks also did not buy their oranges it would hurt. No time like the present to start the boycott.
RobinJuly 24, 2015 at 12:17 am #42664Robin, my personal food boycott is any product that is halal certified. I will not willingly support jihad. I have taken to looking for the certification symbol on labels.
