The Syrian Civil War, also known as the Syrian Uprising, is an ongoing armed conflict in Syria between forces loyal to the Ba’ath government and those seeking to oust it. The unrest began on 15 March 2011, with popular protests that grew nationwide by April 2011.
According to the United Nations, the death toll surpassed 100,000 in June 2013, and reached 120,000 by September 2013. Complete timeline via Wikipedia.

Short documentary about every day life in Aleppo – Pretty intense, emotional view on what war does to people.
BBC: A History of Syria with Dan Snow [2013] – Before the war the Sunnis, Shia’s, Alwawites, Christians and Druze co-existed for centuries. This doc is a good primer because it doesn’t overwhelm you with the complexities of sectarianism.
PBS Frontline: The Battle for Syria [2012] – Examines the early days of the civil war and in typical Frontline style of balanced reporting, it covers the Assad regime’s view as well.
Al Jazeera: Syria: The Reckoning [2012] – How Arab nationalism and the Muslim Brotherhood gave way to military coups which ultimately secured Hafez al-Assad’s grip on power.
Al Jazeera: Lebanon: Sibling of Syria [2012] – A historical context on the war that has spilled over to Lebanon.
PBS Frontline: Syria’s Second Front [2014] – The Free Syrian Army’s battle with Al Qaeda groups. It’s a war within a war

April 23, 2014 at 9:08 am #10362I think Syria will be caught up in this for a long long time. There are plenty of lessons to be learned by following the conflict though.
Here is the second part of the pictures.
