Ehhh… not so much. The “coal scuttle” helmet was designed by the Germans during WWI – the helmet itself derived from the “Pickelhaube” helmet (that goofy looking helmet with the spike on top) – long before any genuine “Nazi’s” even existed.
The Germans have always been good at war and developing cutting edge technology. We kept with the old WWII era steel pot helmet way too long anyways – I was wearing them even as late as the 1980’s. That our new generation followed the german pattern doesn’t necessarily make it a “Nazi” helmet, any more than modern tanks following the German pattern (angled armor, etc) are “Nazi” tanks…
I understand your point though… it’s not how we see it. It’s how other countries see it.
And the loss of the white star… used to be, you saw the white star, you knew it was the “good guys”… I remember reading stories about our pilots during WWII in the Pacific. One would get shot down and have to parachute. They’d land amongst the islanders who barely spoke english and were not necessarily friendly… some were apt to hand you over to the Japs as not… but our pilots would point up to the sky and say “White Star!” and all of a sudden it would click that he was one of the good guys – fed, cared for and protected until he could be gotten back to our side…

German helmet design was simply based on the reqirements needed for effective head protection. The design is very similar to helmets used in Europe for centuries. Some how US designers finally figured it out.
Look at the helmet just before 1400c.April 2, 2015 at 7:54 am #39678
Nothing compared to the changes to air force one.
