January 26 will be the closest asteroid 2004 BL86 will get to Earth

Look at the small video down the article that shows you how close it will come, I hope NASA is right!

Several Hundred Thousand miles, yes… close by astronomical standards, but several dozen Earth diameters is not close by gravitational standards. No way it could get “sucked in” by our gravity, if that is a concern.

If it’s path were to change or they had a decimal point in the wrong place, would they tell us?

Even if we knew it would hit, there isn’t much any of us could do, other than maybe get away from coastal areas if there was time, and for some, perhaps heading towards a BOL nearer the equator in anticipation of an impact causing a “nuclear winter” so to speak. This is not on the list of things I worry about.

An asteroid hit is definitely a “The Sky is Falling” paranoia.
