    In places that have white-outs people die 100 yrds from home because they can’t find the way back to the door.

    From experience it is still possible to get lost even with a compass.
    I recommend taking an actual hiking excursion with someone who knows how to use a compass.
    A start would be to find a scoutmaster who is training a scout on use of a compass and just tag along.
