Yeah , most of the ancient world structure was , what we would consider now as 3rd world countries ………rich and poor , with very few in between . As far as the conditions for those that worked ………..that didnt really change all that much until the 20th century ……………………welcome to humanity .

    Hmmmm. Says the article,

It comes as earlier this year a study suggested Rome was attracting immigrants from the furthest reaches of its empire and beyond 2,000 years ago.

Analysis of skeletons found buried in two ancient cemeteries of the city showed eight of them were from as far away as North Africa and the Alps.

    Beware the immigrants….

Rome controlled the entire Mediterranean so it comes as no surprise northern Africans could be present. They didn’t happen to say if these people were Egyptians or Carthaginian (Libyan). They would like to imply something else I’m sure. The article also calls all the people they analysed laborers when in fact these people were probably slaves.
