A question for the Americans in the group. How many of you fly the American flag at your homes? I have since 9/11 when I said I’d do it until the war with Radical Islam was over, and we’re not remotely close to that so I still fly it, but in going for a walk this morning I was thinking just how few people have flags up.
For the non-Americans here, is it common to fly your national flag from your homes?March 6, 2015 at 6:34 pm #38087

I consider the Tea Party flag mine.
There’s an ordinance. If a flag flutters it could be a distraction to drivers and can’t be allowed. It doesn’t cover the US flag but it eliminates mine. So I refuse to fly the Amerikan flag.
Although I will fly the Fort Sumter diamond flag for july. It flutters nicely. Let the drivers crash. Not my problem.March 6, 2015 at 11:59 pm #38124
I fly the Confederate flag . But to answer your question , it depends on the neighborhood . You will always see many more people flying the flag on their home during the 4th , Veterans Day , and Memorial Day . After that , a lot of people dont , mostly because they dont think about it that much . Another reason might be that the nations moral has been dropping for a long time now , it just does not have the meaning it once did , for me ………I’m done , I fly the Confederate flag . as I feel my ancestors were right ……………….the government is proving it day by day .March 7, 2015 at 1:31 am #38129
Brulen, you are joking about the flag flying ordinance aren’t you?
I hadn’t ever thought about flying any flag other than the US flag, but I suppose if I were to, I’d look back to maybe something from the Revolutionary War. Tolik, I know the Civil War still simmers down South but up here it doesn’t get much attention or thought at all. The Revolutionary War is much more prominent culturally.March 7, 2015 at 4:33 am #38139
I’m a westerner , but a lot of family history , lot of rebs , first in the Revolution , then in the civil war . How’s it workin for us now ?March 7, 2015 at 9:03 am #38143
Veteran and have both a Navy and USMC flag on the wall in my cave, but try to be low profile as I can outside my house. Have security cameras, lighting and big dogs. Just too liberal here to deal with it.

One problem i have with flying a flag is if you’re going to fly it do it with the respect it deserves. A flag should be taken down before sunset unless it is properly lit. It should be in good condition displaying proper color and untattered. I believe Tolik hit the nail on the head as well. Moral is down. It has become a negative thing to be too patriotic. I am glad this subject was brought up. It reminds me to not be so lazy and go fly my flag. Thank you.March 7, 2015 at 5:56 pm #38155

It wasn’t a joke when the BTK zoning guy came around and ordered my wife to take it down on the spot. When she said I would come over and do it later he got the cop. The cop gave her a summons to appear. She appeared and it was dismissed with the condition it be taken down in a reasonable amount of time.
Its not like we’re new here, but we didn’t know about their ordinance. the zoning guy apparently has a grudge against us for some unknown reason. Nobody here has ever treated us like this before. It was truely outrageous. I hope Mr. BindTortureKill gets whacked by a rogue moose someday. He deserves it.March 7, 2015 at 6:19 pm #38157
I could be wrong but , I dont think people are not flying it because they are afraid of being looked at as too patriotic . I think they dont fly it more because they feel that it has no meaning to them anymore , seeing what this country has become , and is becoming , both at home and abroad , what is three to be patriotic about ? Sad to say , but I dont fly the pajama flag because its become kind of an embarrassment on many levels . I would like to be proud of it and patriotic , but its just not there anymore . Brulen, just when I think I have heard it all, something new comes along. I wouldn’t have guessed it possible that there was a place that had an ordinance against flying flags on private property. If they have time to have regulations of that nature their budget needs to be cut, and then cut again until common sense prevails. My town spent the grand sum of $2,000 last year for a part time zoning administrator.March 7, 2015 at 10:22 pm #38176

I sometimes wonder how the USA and the CSA would have evolved had the CSA won the war and seceded. Could either country have become a superpower independent of the other, and if not, what would the implications of that have been for WWII and the post-WWII era? Would the USA immigration laws which until fairly recently were very European-centric have stopped the mass migration of Southern blacks into Northern cities? Would the mass migration of Northern retirees that have headed South have occurred? This mass movement of people had great impact on both North & South. Economics and changing technology would have ended slavery soon enough even without the Civil War, but how would the black-white situation have evolved without interference from the North? Would it have impacted the significant relocation of industry from North to South that occurred these past couple generations?
Me who for the past 400+ years has not had an ancestor from further south or further west than Northern New Jersey, has reached the point post-60 years old that I think the South should have been allowed to secede. I’m just thinking maybe we’d all be worse off if they did.March 7, 2015 at 10:56 pm #38187
Who knows , maybe they would have shipped most of the blacks to Africa or other nation willing to take them in as a condition for freedom ? They would have most likely had a strong desire to keep the euro-centric population .The southern border with Mexico would be secure . Every civilized nation does eventually abolish slavery , they would be no different . Who knows ? but I do know there is a possibility in our time of either another civil war , or secession movement .March 7, 2015 at 11:21 pm #38188
I imagine someone could write a great book hypothesizing how it would have turned out. I don’t see how there could be another secession without a total societal collapse precipitating it. Everything is just too interconnected economically and infrastructure-wise and people from all over the country have migrated to all over the country. Geographic areas aren’t near so homogenous culturally anymore. The great divide in the country really isn’t North vs South. It is more urban/suburban vs small town/rural.March 8, 2015 at 4:34 am #38197
Someone probably has , I know there have been books like that speculating on what would have happened if WW2 never took place . I agree , the North South thing is pretty much gone , but the divides go further than you think , urban / rural is the least of it . too many culture mixes that dont play well with each other , religion problems , liberal/conservative , freedom / socialist , etc . This nation has not been this divided sense right before the first civil war started . Something is going to happen .
