    Preference is irrelevant in a sustained SHTF scenario. My thoughts about this topic are too long to list here so I started my own thread:

    Depends on situation; for night ‘hunting’ I have a suppressed 300 whisper on an AR frame, with an ATN gen II night vision scope. It is accurate to about 150 yards and carries decent energy at that distance (muzzle energy for suppressed ammo is about 600 joules; for non suppressed ammo the energy is about like a 5.56mm). The 300 whisper Sounds about like a bb gun and that’s a big counter to the low power. .

    For checking on what the dogs are alarming about, outside I carry a Remington 870 with an extended mag and overhand folding stock, loaded with 2.75 inch magnum #4 buckshot, and a walther p99 9mm pistol with a laser site and 500 lumen light. Inside the house, I do house clearing with a Stoeger 12g w/ 3″ magnum shells and the Browning side arm; I use an ATN Gen III night vision monocular goggle that automatically switches off when I turn on the 2000 lumen retina burning flash light. .

    My daily concealed carry system is a Browning HP 9mm, and a 9mm AMT back-up, both loaded with alternating 9mm Buffalo bore and G2 high penetration ammo.

    In a grid down setting, I would probably recon my property with a 16″ AR with a C mag + a suppressed 9mm Beretta M9 with 147 gr suppressed FMJ ammo, and a pair of 16″ kukris. I view night vision as crucial for all non daytime ops, and have multiple redundancies there.

    That’s about it. Everybody needs to get ready; all the former agency and military people I used to work with are starting to take early retirement and many are moving out of the country altogether. All are saying something is coming before the end of 2014. So lock and load.

    @WarDoc

    Can you recommend a lower priced night vision setup?
    Are any of the imported copies any good? I have seen the US Military “copies” which are inexpensive, but are these all just junk? Anything that is not durable would be a bad deal, and worse than nothing if it breaks. IMO…

    My primary go-to is a 12 gauge Mossberg 500 pump shotgun, because shooting a duck with an AR-15 leaves very little but feathers, and an AK will turn a rabbit to goo. A pump shotgun will kill both with ease and still leave them edible. Load it with buckshot and it will also take out feral humans if need be. If I see a deer or a feral hog, I drop in a slug. An M500 is a very tough, reliable weapon, and 12ga is the most common centerfire ammo in the USA. A shotgun is the one weapon who’s ballistic charactaristics change dramatically just by switching ammo.

    Vep, Agree the shotgun is a great weapon. For city SHTF it is one of the best weapons.

    Cute. The rifle really IS an AK-47–see the cut out in the receiver just to the front of the magazine? Means its a milled receiver. The stamped version with fixed stock is an AKM, and with a folding stock an AKS. They are GREAT weapons, but the best for any shooter is the weapon with which they can hit their target. Good to see ladies on this site! Too many out there don’t seem interested in guns or survivalism…

    G3/HK91

    Reliability like an AK. Accuracy like an AR.

    Also have a HK93 in 5.56mm… the G3/91 has a Bundeswehr issue Hensoldt ZF24, Model II with the reticle illuminator. The ’93 has an EO Tech 512, but I’ll probably change that. At least get an issue ZF24 with the 5.56mm BCD. Harder to come by, but doable… if you know certain people.

    Then, there’s “Bonesaw”… that Winchester M12 trench gun with the M1917 bayonet…

    All have their purpose.

    Photos are representative samples close to mine….

    undeRGRond, Yes you are. Just keep buying ammo. The good news is ammo prices have come down.
