    This works better, faster & hotter burn if the sticks are elevated an inch or so with a metal mesh that will support them and allow an air draft underneath. Any size mesh will work – cut it to fit the brick hole depth plus an extra two inches wider – then bend an inch at 90 degrees on each length to make a shelf that fits inside the hole.

    You are right NO – I used a small rack that used to sit inside a mini-roasting pan I had (but lost the lid to. But it only was about 1/2″ raised. But air did help draftng ‘specially.
