In the days of sailing ships , it was common practice to have a cat on board , this was to help with pest control , but the sailers learned to pay attention to what the cat was doing , they would hunker down in an area and the sailors would know they were in for a storm . The Vikings also used cats on their raids , they would use them to stay on the ship . The two or three warriors left behind to guard the ship would pay attention to the cats reactions , as they could hear anybody trying to sneak up on the party guarding the ship .
