Interestingly enough , the question of secession has never been resolved . The South was brought back into the Union by force of arms . Then the country moved on , in order to put the tragic event behind them , without settling the issue , and that is how it remains . One state alone , to be able to make it , odds are very low , groups of states , however , could be successful . People would have to be willing to sacrifice their lifestyle greatly , and make due with less .I dont see that happening soon , especially in a place like California , where appearance is everything . If a group of states attempted it today , and if they didnt attempt violence , they could probably get away with it .That was the problem with the first civil war ……………..if the South had not fired on Fort Sumpter , the Feds would have been hard pressed to justify military action . They also would not have gotten the support they needed , even in Union states .
