There is a youtube channel , that recreates what the colonists did with what they had , most of it was very simple , but good . Ash cakes , were as basic as you can get , flour and water , maybe a little salt if they had it . They would get hot coals going then mix flour , water into a thick dough , wrap in a leaf , then toss on top of the coals , or place directly on the coals , bakes very fast , and that was the colonial soldiers bread .
