Middlebury is a school with the best of everything and is located in a perfect setting. The students have enormous privilege relative to the average young person, and they apparently think they are the only ones entitled to an opinion. The college has a huge campus adjacent to the downtown and dominates the community. Every now and then my wife and I like to walk around the downtown area, maybe do a little shopping, and go to a brew pub type restaurant there.
What happened at Middlebury is happening nationwide and so they are not unique in any way, but students like this will be woefully unprepared for the real world when they graduate. Yesterday in our local paper there were a lot of student statements about the riot, and for the most part they aren’t getting it. A couple did, but others think the risk of letting “dangerous” conservatives speak outweighs their right to free speech.
