When I say the primary divide is between urban/suburban and small town/rural, I include in that both the cultural differences and the fact the urban/suburban areas lean liberal and small town/rural areas lean conservative. Just different worldviews. Increasingly what determines whether a State is red vs blue is the extent to which their majority populations are urban vs rural. Rural populations declining or at best staying flat while urban populations grow is slowly transitioning traditionally red States to blue. This is the great divide.
