Motorists targeted on the roadside
Groups of armed men are pouncing on motorists who pull off the road to make a phone call. “The criminals walk around in groups of three or more, and are usually armed. They target cars parked next to the road, especially people who stop to take a phone call,” said Lyttelton police spokesperson Warrant Officer Hero Gumbu.“These criminals will either hijack the person in the car, or they will rob them. We urge people to be extra cautious when driving around, and not to stop unless they know they are in a safe area.”Gumbu said criminals would steal anything during the festive season.
