The problem I see with some pretty smart guys is that they develop a tunnel vision. That means they are so focused on one or a few areas of expertise they forget the big picture.

I did a series of interviews for a philosophy themed magazine with some guys leading departments of ivy league universities. Some of them had bestselling books published and were at the top of their fields but I was surprised how limited their overall world view was. Not much better and in some cases worse than when you speak to regular folks who like to read.

Plus… look who goes into politics… its a certain kind of person who does this.
